  1. GLENCOE

Let’s look at some of the finer details. What does a Trail Running Camp in Glencoe with Trail Runaways really look like?

-You’ll meet at Woodlands Glencoe and those of you that are non-residential will already have been shown where to set up camp, those of you staying with us will have been shown your accommodation.

-A short group introduction will take place in the studio where we’ll all say hello, have a coffee and look over the plans for the next few days. This will become our space for the duration of the camp where we’ll complete our run briefs, strength workouts and more.

-Let’s hit the trails! Our first group run goes straight from our studio onto a short elevated circuit with amazing views. Here we’ll get our maps out and enjoy a little trail hunt.

-A relatively early night as we get a good sleep for our big day tomorrow.

DAY 1

-A bright and early start for some morning mobility before getting out for a big day on the trails in Glencoe.

-Our route today will include up to 40km in distance and over 3000m of elevation. There will be summits, steep inclines, fun and fast descents and everything in between. A good head for heights is required but there is no technical scrambling terrain involved in our route plans.

-We’ll stop to take in the views many times, but also to look at our uphill running technique. There are ways to improve immediately with the right technique - Brian will show you how to run more efficiently and faster uphill. This will be accompanied by downhill technique workshops right there on the hill.

-Coming back to the studio and Woodlands Glencoe there will be time for some sauna and pool decompression before an afternoon of talks at the studio. Covering everything from safety on the trails to what you should always carry in your running vest. This session will largely be a collaborative experience, Brian loves group discussions where everyone feels involved

-A short run out on some easy trails before dinner prepares us for a feast. You will enjoy a fully catered meal with hearty home-cooked food and delicious Bordeaux wine. Brian will even dust off some of his own collection Whisky which he’ll enjoy sharing with you, if you’re brave enough to give it a try!.

DAY 2

-A slightly longer lie in the morning, it’s Sunday after all. We will meet at the studio at 11am. This gives you time in the morning to enjoy some of your own exploring should you wish to do so. The studio will be open if you’d like to use the mats.

-Time to hit the trails! There are two options today, option A and option B. Katie will be leading the option B run, Brian option A - not to confuse you!

A - up to 22km with over 1500m
B - up to 10km with over 400m

-After your afternoon trail run and meeting back at the studio (at different times) there will be a session to debrief the weekend. Here we’ll reflect on the time spent together and Brian will share some images and footage with you all. There will be an opportunity for everyone to share their favourite moments too, a nice way to end our outdoor adventures together.

-After a little while to relax we’ll come together in the evening for another catered meal. This time, a little more relaxed and finished off with some time by the outdoor fire, wine in hand and a lot of chat about all the future trail races we want to complete.

-The end.

DAY 3

Throughout the Trail Running Camp you will join the group in the Trail Runaways minibus, driven by Brian. This means you truly just need to get here, we do the rest. Brian will also arrange a transfer from Glasgow & Edinburgh as well as drop-off. He will also arrange a transfer from Fort William train station. Email hello@trailrunaways.com for more details. The above camp described is our full camp taking place in September. Our August camp is a condensed version, where all the guided runs will be the same as well as use of the studio for sessions, but everything else described takes place in our September camp. Please note, we only share detailed information of our routes with clients who have made a booking.

It only costs £100 to secure your spot

FAQs

How will I get to Glencoe?

We are based just off the A82 near the Ballachulish Bridge. There’s enough parking if you wish to drive but our preferred choice would be you choose the transfer from Glasgow or Edinburgh. This helps reduce vehicles on the roads and we believe is a better experience for you too. There’s a huge variety of train links that take you to Scotland’s biggest cities.

I’m a bit new to trail running, will I manage?

To get the most out of this camp, we recommend a certain level of confidence on trails as some of our routes do go into the mountains themselves, though not onto any exposed or scrambling terrain. We recommend reaching out if you’re unsure. We’ll ask you a few questions and immediately put your mind at ease that you CAN do it!

What does ‘catered meal’ mean?

We absolutely adore home-cooked meals. We’re excited to share some of our favourite carb-loading recipes with you all. Wine is one of life’s greatest joys. You of course don’t have to drink it, but we love sharing special wines, sampling and tasting them and enjoying them over a warming outdoor fire at night.

What’s the accommodation like?

Woodlands Glencoe is one of the Highlands most successful small, family-owned businesses. They’ve won many awards and can almost certainly be classed as a pioneering group for outdoor lodge self-catering in the UK. They have over 17 individual luxury lodges as well as Woodlands House, where you’ll be staying. The house itself commands impressive views and is within walking distance of the studio where we’ll enjoy our sessions.

How can I find out more about the routes we’ll go on?

We share detailed route descriptions on request to booked clients. We do hope our clients trust that we only take people on the very best routes. Brian has been running almost exclusively in Glencoe for the past 5 years and before that had visited the area many times to run the mountains. He Is the local legend of many strava segments here and over the last 2 years has spent a great amount of time scouting routes and piecing together trails for this camp. Brian finished 4th at the 2022 Glencoe Skyline, so he knows these lumps well enough!
